Managing technology risks and unlock the true power of AI

2023 will be viewed as the point when Artificial Intelligence (AI) tipped into the mainstream, with a 286% rise in media coverage of the topic. And whilst headlines were grabbed by generative AI, the real AI story goes much, much deeper.

This transformational technology is accelerating progress – and has the potential to go further as a force for good and move us towards Society 5.0, a ”human-centered society that balances economic and technological advancement to solve society’s problems”. Importantly, it also raises questions about how we build trust in AI and what guardrails are needed to ensure that AI shapes our future in a positive way.

Societal And Technology Leadership Concerns

With a digitally native Society 5.0, it is likely that those organizations that ignore the potential of AI may struggle to survive. Instead, they'll be overtaken by organizations that embrace emerging technologies and, through effective risk management, enable future thinking and progressive business strategies that are digital by design.

The biggest risks today center around humans and the impacts of unclear legal regulation as well as the risk that programming bias may pose to humans through automated decision making and consumer privacy.

Creating a pathway and response to Digital Trust in AI

Like all aspects of technology, the purpose for which it is intended and the manner in which it is deployed will be central to its success. International standards are often central to ensuring that a pathway to success is identified. The world of AI is no different, and the development of ISO 42001 aims to establish a management system for governments and organizations to address the risks of AI deployments.

In the absence of existing well-framed regulations that will be applicable to all sectors and geographies, standards such as ISO 42001 are central to the progressive view of the digital trust required to enshrine confidence in future technologies and can help deliver the trust by considering the governance and ethics of the use of AI.

To achieve this full potential future state, societal ecosystems must demonstrate their future readiness and trust in all layers of AI technology. The predominant layers/characteristics of technology that need to be addressed to create demonstrable trust in AI are safety, security and resilience. Existing international standards such as ISO 27001, ISO 27005 and ISO 27701 present initial guidance on managing technology risks.
